Why use the ferry?

The Ferry provides a vital link between Gosport and Portsmouth for 10,000 passengers each day. Crossing time is approximately 4 minutes each way. Using this convenient mode of transport not only saves the time and money of driving all the way around to Portsmouth, but also has environmental benefits and supports the community and local businesses:

  • The Gosport Ferry is an environmentally friendly form of public transport, allowing 3.6 million passenger journeys that would otherwise be made by car, which would generate an additional 22,000 tonnes of CO2
  • Using the Gosport Ferry:
    • Reduces traffic congestion
    • Helps improve air quality
    • Reduces carbon emissions
  • The Gosport Ferry is a local partner in Young Apprentice and Work Experience programmes
  • This year Gosport Ferry will spend £200,000 with other local businesses
  • There were 37 leisure cruises in summer 2008, attracting an estimated 6,000 tourists to the area
  • There is a special “Market Day” service from Cowes to Gosport every Tuesday from July until September, boosting trade for local shop keepers and market traders.
  • The Gosport Ferry is an active supporter of  local organisations and charities including the Gosport Waterfront Festival, Falklands Veterans, Gosport in Bloom, Harbour Cancer Centre, HMS Sultan and the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service
  • The Gosport Ferry also supports local and national charities via Children in Need and Red Nose Day.
  • The Ferry is the principal sponsor of Gosport Football Club and Gosport Netball Team
  • In 2007 it won the Gosport Business Awards –‘Benefit to the Community’ Award
  • There are 73,000 ferry journeys per annum, 364 days a year with 99.7% reliability rating
  • There are 40 locally based experienced staff employed with an average length of service of 15 years.
